About
Tea tree
Melacleuca Alternifolia also known as Australian tea
tree oil.
Tea
Tree (melacleua Alternifolia) is a member of the
family Myrtaceae. Tea tree is one of over 150
species of Melaleuca, which is indigenous to
Australia. The tea tree grows in swampy, low-lying
areas on the northern coast of New South Wales. The
oil is extracted from the leaves, hence the word tea
tree oil.
Aborigines have used tea tree oil for centuries for
all sorts of skin diseases. In 1770 Captain James
Cook arrived on the coast of New South Wales where
him and his crew brewed tea from the leaves, hence
the name tea tree. Word soon spread about the
‘medicinal properties and is now worldwide known as
an anti microbial, antiseptic agent. |
